ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

MICKEY DEMAS
I am Michela Demas, a fine artist based out of Maryland. I have been drawing and painting for roughly 13 years which has lead to me to explore a variety of artistic avenues such as watercolor, graphite, paper mache, acrylic and collage. With a specialty in portraiture, to date, my work has been on exhibit in the US Capitol gallery as well as commissioned by BET network following the murder of George Floyd. My work seeks to capture moments of time, pieces of personality, ones story, and deliver that on canvas. Creating is the closest thing to God I know.

I developed a curiosity for drawing and building when my dad would bring me along while he worked for an architecture firm. I would get the opportunity to see full scale models of shopping centers, libraries, apartment complexes, all made by hand. I wold marvel at enormous architecture drawings that covered entire tables. The special pens and markers they used were so interesting to me and so I started to draw my own ideas and with the help of a few origami techniques, build my own little paper villages. I believe this initiation lead me to pursue and complete a degree in industrial design.
In terms of my style, I would not say that I don’t have one, a definitive way of painting and applying color that is recognizable. I like to experiment with different materials nd those yield varying textures, and lines for each piece. I love recreating things whether it’s a view or a person who is seated in thought. I like to study them as I paint them and in this process, I am waiting for their personality to become apparent in the piece and when they have arrived, that is when I put down my brush. For some, I put down my brush when it looks almost photorealistic, for others, the painting takes on a more abstract point of view. I would say that the eyes of my portrait follow you so I guess that is a a kind of style of mine. But I am always changing and so I understand that there is no set formula to creating. My works captures a piece of each and everyone I paint inside of them, remaining young forever.
