More information about this piece:
Kota reliquary figures, also known as mbulu ngulu, are abstract, metal-covered wooden sculptures from Gabon created to act as guardians for the bones of important ancestors. They were used by various peoples in the region, including the Mahongwe and Obamba, and the term "Kota" is a colonial appropriation.
Function and cultural significance
- Protection and connection: The figures were attached to baskets or bark boxes that contained the skulls and bones of deceased family members. This was especially important for the nomadic, slash-and-burn farmers of the region, allowing them to maintain a physical and spiritual connection to their ancestors as they moved.
- Spirituality and power: The figures were believed to retain the power of the deceased and provided protection and good fortune to their descendants. The glittering surface of the metal was said to represent the water that separates the living from the dead, reinforcing the reliquary's spiritual power.
